12 Things To Know About Carpet Cleaning

by: John Murray

Carpets, there in all of our homes. Of course it's a given that at some point you will be doing some carpet cleaning. Here are 12 things to know about carpet cleaning that will make your life easier.

1. Toxic

Most of the products on the market for carpet cleaning are safe and will have a minimal impact on the environment. However some of the carpet cleaning products do contain toxic chemicals which can be hazardous to the person using them as well as other people in the house or pets. So be sure to read the labels carefully before using. Always try to choose a product with the least amount of chemicals and in the mildest you can find that will work.

2. Clean Often

It's always best to clean your carpets on a regular basis. If you do not clean your carpets on a regular basis you will need to use a stronger chemical product because the dirt will have ground itself deeper into the carpet and it becomes more difficult to lift. Cleaning your carpets on a regular basis is easier on the environment, your health, and it will help extend the life of the carpet.

3. Use Caution

Read labels very carefully. Not only on the product but on any documentation provided with the carpet. Should you use the wrong product or a product with stronger chemical than your carpet can handle you could damage the carpet.

4. Hire The Pros

If you are not comfortable with cleaning your carpets yourself or you can't be bothered to rent a carpet cleaning machine, drag it home, and get to work, then hire the pros! There are many professionals that will clean your carpets for a very reasonable fee and give you a guarantee on the work they do.

5. Installation

If you are laying new carpets chances are the reason you are doing this is because you want them to look appealing and accent the room while at the same time providing functionality. If you install the carpet poorly or install the wrong type of carpet for the area you will have a higher maintenance cost and the carpets will need to be cleaned more frequently. So make sure you choose the correct carpets. Regular vacuuming and spot removal will also lower your cleaning maintenance costs.

6. The Right Underlay

The underlay is more important than you might think and is directly related to carpet cleaning. You need to match the underlay to the type of carpet you will be installing. Carpet should not be placed in areas were water, chemicals or hard to clean products could be spilled on the carpet. Kitchens, copy rooms, lockers, and entrances to buildings are not a good location to place carpets because your carpet cleaning costs will be high. Poor grade underlay will affect how the stain soaks into the carpet and how difficult stain removal becomes.

7. Stop The Worst

The worst soiling on your carpets comes from outside. So if you stop outside soil from coming in contact with your carpet you will reduce the amount of chemical cleaners you will have to use. Place a large walking mat at all outside entrances Every few days you should vacuum the mats this will prevent soil from entering the carpeted areas of your home. Have visitors remove their shoes so that they aren't dragging that loose dirt across the carpets.

8. Vacuum Often

Believe it or not daily vacuuming with a good vacuum cleaner that has good suction and a power head with a brush type power bar will help to eliminate soil build up and reduce the amount of times you will need carpet cleaning performed. That's because the dirt gets picked up before it has a chance to get ground in and soil the carpet.

9. No Drinks

Limit the places you allow the kids to have drinks and messy foods. If you have young children make them stay seated while drinking. If you are really concerned about reducing staining then don't let any family member's family drink or carry soft drinks, coffee or other food items across the carpet.

10. Act Fast

If you can react to the spill immediately and any spots you see with a good spot remover you will help prevent stain from becoming permanent and it will save you having to use a carpet cleaner. Be careful what you use to remove stains because if you use the wrong chemicals you could smear the stain and spread it further and deeper into the carpet. Always first try clear cold water and blotting with a cloth to remove the stain and only move on to a stronger product only as a last resort.

11. Toxic Chemicals

You should know that carpet spot removal cleaning products contain some of the most dangerous chemicals found in any cleaning products. If you us these products be sure to wear gloves and use the cleaner according to the manufactures directions. Avoid all type 4 spot removers because they contain Tetrachlorethylene which is very toxic to people and pets.

12. Steam Cleaners

Steam or rotary cleaners for carpets use a fairly mild products so they are an excellent choice. But you can still misuse them so follow the directions carefully. If you use this type of cleaner you will have to be careful that you do not saturate the carpet with hot water because if you do it will take longer to dry and may result in damage to the carpet.

Some of the cleaners supplied with the machines you rent from the local store are highly toxic so be sure the room or rooms you are working in have a good supply of fresh air. Be sure to keep kids and pets off the newly cleaned carpets until it is dry because there is always a residue left on the carpets that can be harmful to kids or pets. Always let the carpets dry completely and then vacuum right after it is dry to remove any residual contaminants.

These 12 things to know about carpet cleaning that will make your life easier much easier and keep you on top of the carpet cleaning game.

About The Author

John Murray makes it easy to go through the carpet buying process and provides tips to keep your carpet lasting long.
12 Tips To Remove Stains With Carpet Cleaners

by: John Murray

It's not uncommon to spill something on the carpet. In fact it's just a fact of life. It's going to happen sooner or later. But not to worry. Here are 12 tips to remove stains with carpet cleaners. In fact sometimes you can wipe away the stain without a commercial grade cleaner.

1. Be fast

If you are very quick you may be able to blot away the stain before it even has a chance to set. Grab a white absorbent cloth or tissue and use the four basic steps to remove the stain.

2. Check Color

Check to make sure the carpet is colorfast and safe to clean, test the carpet in an area that inconspicuous before you apply the cleaner to the stain in the carpet.

3. Dry Cleaning Solution

You can use dry cleaning solution (surgical spirt). Detergent solution one teaspoonful of detergent to ? liters of warm water. Dab Spot.

4. Vinegar

You can also use detergent and vinegar. It must be white vinegar and not malt vinegar. Add one tablespoon of vinegar to the detergent solution. Dab Spot.

5. Ammonia

Smelly, eye watering but very effective. Add one teaspoon of branded household ammonia to one cup of warm water. Dab Spot.

5. Alcohol, Coffee

If the stain is alcohol, coffee, tea, liquid foods or urine blot up the surplus spillage but do not rub it back and forth. Use detergent and vinegar solution. Start by working from the outside of the stain moving inward a little at a time. Frequently blot with a dry cloth

6. Chocolate, Blood, Glue

If the stain is chocolate, sweets, blood, glue, ice cream, milk ,soft drinks or vomit you will have to clean up the excess using a blunt knife or a putty knife. Be sure not to grind any of the spill into the carpet. Us the detergent solution starting at the outer edge working your way into the middle of the spill. Blot dry and then use the ammonia solution and blot dry again.

7. Fats, Tar, Gum

If the stain is solid fats, tar, chewing gum, oil, ointment, or shoe polish scrape up the excess with a knife or a putty scrapper. Use the dry cleaning solution followed by the detergent and vinegar solution and blot dry.

8. Unknown Spills

For stains or spills which you are not sure as to what they are first scrape or blot up the excess material. Then use the dry cleaning solvent followed by luke warm water and blot dry. If the stain is still there treat with the detergent or the detergent and vinegar solutions then blot dry.

9. Follow Up

All the above procedures should be followed up by a simple mix of one part white vinegar and four parts water. Place mixture into a spray bottle Spay over the stained area and blot dampened area. Do not rub to remove excess moisture. White paper towels work well. Stack 5 to 8 sheets on top of each other and blot till dry.

If the moisture is still present stack 5 to 8 sheets of paper towel and place over the stained area and place a heavy book on top to help absorb the excess moisture. Leave overnight if needed. If you are leaving it overnight be sure to change the paper towels before bed. Repeat as often as necessary.

10. Dab and Blot

Remember always scrape solids up and blot liquid spills. Never rub from side to side. The little effort it takes to make up the above solutions will save you a lot of money and time. Always remember to do a spot test on a hidden area before applying. Be sure to dab and work in towards the center of the stain. Even if the stain will not come out it will make it easier for the professionals to lift it when they come to clean the carpets.

11. Store Safely

If you are making up solutions in advance be sure to mark all containers before storing them and never leave them where young children might get at them.

12. Scotch Guard

Your new carpet may be scotch guarded to make it stain resistant but it is always a good idea to remove the stain with the above treatments anyway.

If you use these 12 tips to remove stains with carpet cleaners you can't go wrong!

About The Author

John Murray makes it easy to go through the carpet buying process and provides tips to keep your carpet lasting long.
Contract Cleaners ? A Guide For Businesses. Part 3

by: David Andrew Smith

In this third part I will be looking at the remaining questions you should be asking of the commercial cleaning companies tendering for your cleaning contract.

Will the cleaning be supervised and how often?

If the contract only requires 1 ? 2 cleaners then inspections should be carried out weekly. Once the contract has been up and running for some time and the cleaners have settled into a good routine then it may be possible to visit only monthly. Contact between the supervising individual and you the client is entirely dependant upon your wishes If the clean is going well then the majority of clients do not want to be bothered with even courtesy calls to see if they are satisfied. Decisions on this are entirely up to you the client.

If the clean requires 3 or more cleaners then a supervisor should be on site at all times cleaning is taking place. If it is 3 ? 5 cleaners then normally one of the cleaners will be acting as the supervisor. Numbers in excess of 6 will normally have a specialist supervisor in place. Having 3 or more cleaners on a site without direct supervision is rarely successful.

Can the company provide a full cleaning survey

This would entail the cleaning company doing a thorough survey of your premises, noting all your cleaning needs. This will then be presented as a written report or in the form of a spreadsheet. Either way it will detail all the cleaning that could be done and the frequency and possibly the method especially if it involves the use of specialised equipment. It is then up to you, the client to decide which elements you actually want incorporated into the cleaning contract. This protects both sides from any unfair complaints.

Too often when a cleaning company is called in they are shown around the building quite quickly with only the barest of outlines as to what exactly the client requires. The client knows that they want their premises clean and tidy but some of the specifics of that can easily go unmentioned. It is not until some little time has passed that someone complains that the cleaners are not doing something. Something that was not ever mentioned but assumed would be done. A classic example is the dust and fluff that accumulates behind workstations cluttered with computer cables. These may not even be normally very visible. The person perhaps changes a piece of hardware and pulls out the table to find all this fluff amongst the cables and then complains that the cleaners have not been doing there job!

The idea of the survey is to put the clients unspoken expectations into a practical reality. That is if they want certain jobs carried out they must appreciate that they take additional time and must be paid for accordingly. It helps to crystallise what the client actually wants and is prepared to pay for so there can be no complaints further down the line.

About The Author

David Andrew Smith has been working for many years in the cleaning industry and is the owner of http://www.wesparkle.co.uk, general cleaners and specialists in the care and maintenance of natural stone such as marble, granite and limestone

david@wesparkle.co.uk

Robotic Vacuum Cleaners, Sit Back, Relax And Let Them Do The Work

by: Richard Gazzo

As technology continues to develop, life becomes easier and there are more choices. Not only are computers developing at breakneck speeds, but even household appliances such as vacuum cleaners are evolving. Have you even heard of a robot vacuum, well you will soon enough. What are robotic vacuum cleaners, these battery powered creatures roam the floors of your home or office looking for dust and debris. They are designed to make life easier for you by vacuuming any dirt in its path.

Robot vacuums were invented by Electrolux and introduced into the consumer marketplace in 2001, then came Roomba vacuums, they perfected these cordless vacs and took them to the next level. So what can these types of vacuums do for you? Imagine this scenario, you come from a hard day at work, the kids come home with dirt all over their shoes tracking it all over your clean carpets. That would drive most parents crazy, but with the help of the Roomba vac you can read your newspaper and lets the robot do all the work for you.

Your'e probably wondering how this all work? Roomba's vacuum cleaners use a 3 stage cleaning system, that are designed to clean the edge of your walls, under neath all types of furniture and anywhere else it detects dirt. That's right these robots can actually detect dirty areas on your carpet or floor and do extra cleaning in those areas to clean it effectively. And these vacuums actually have a brain, they can detect areas such as stairs and actually avoid them! They use infrared sensors to detect the stairs in your home and stay away from them.

And after the room is cleaned, Roomba goes back to a recharging station to charge its battery for the next time you have a family disaster. You should know that Roomba isn't the only company manufacturing robotic vacuum systems, other models you might want to check out include, Electrolux Trilobite, Karcher RC 3000, EVac and the Samsung VC-RP30W. The most popular of all robot vacs is the Roomba Discovery SE.

Why stress out if you don't have to, let the robots do the work for you. Long gone are the days of vacuuming after the children. Oh, and if you're wondering about the price of a robot vac it will run you about $350. Check prices out online to find the best deals and cheapest prices on all your cleaning needs.

About The Author

Richard Gazzo is a writer, providing articles on all types of vacuums, such as Miele vacuums, Electrolux vacuum models , Panasonic vacuum. and even central vacuum systems. http://www.best-vacuum-cleaners.net/.

Cleaning Your Computer Will Help It Last Longer And Work Better

by: Scott Dary

To clean your mouse ? The trackball can pick up dirt and dust from your desk and mouse pad. Also, the wheels that the trackball come in contact with get dirty and need to be cleaned. If you notice your mouse "doesn't work right", it may be time to clean it. First, turn your PC off. Turn your mouse over and you will see the ball sticking out of a cover. Look at the arrows on the cover and turn it in the indicated direction to open it up. Don?t worry about anything falling out. The only thing that comes out is the ball, and maybe a little dust, and you want to take that out anyway. You can clean the ball with alcohol if it needs it, but usually just wiping it off will work. A cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol works well for cleaning the wheels. When you?re done, drop the ball back in and put the cover back on. If cleaning it doesn?t help, it may be time to replace it. PC mice are usually less than $10 and are sometime free if you watch for sales in the Sunday paper.

To clean your optical mouse - If you have an optical mouse, one with a red light under it, there is no ball and you can just wipe off the lenses with a cotton swab.

To clean your keyboard - Never spray anything into your keyboard, this includes coffee. You can use a vacuum cleaner to clean dust, dirt, staples and cookie crumbs from your keyboard, but make sure your computer is off before starting, and make sure you don?t have any loose keys. Rubbing alcohol works well to clean the keys and surface of your keyboard, but use it sparingly. Using a cloth works well, as paper towels tend to leave little pieces behind. If you spill something sticky like your favorite soft drink on the keyboard, the keys will likely start to get sticky as it dries. It could be time to replace it. They too are cheap and can be free if you watch for a sale.

To clean the computer - You can use a vacuum to clean around the vents and anywhere else that looks dusty. Be careful in the back of the PC to not knock any plugs loose. It is a good idea to keep the vents clean and free of dust, pet hair or lint. How often you clean your computer depends more on the environment it's in than the manufacturer?s recommendation. I have 2 dogs that shed so I clean my computer about every 2 months. A cloth and alcohol can be used on the outside of the PC if it?s dirty but, again, turn it off first.

To clean your monitor - A vacuum can be used to remove dust from the vents. If you have fingerprints on the glass, you can use the same wipes that you would use on your glasses or use as soft cloth and warm water followed by a dry cloth. Think of your monitor glass the same way you think of glasses, if you wear them. They may have delicate coatings on them that can be scratched. Always avoid chemicals on displays.

To clean a laptop display or LCD ?
Caring For Your Vinyl Siding

by: Henry Gallant

A low maintenance and durable material, vinyl siding is an increasingly popular home exterior. Even though it is a low maintenance material, you will still want to clean your vinyl siding from time to time. Just make sure you know about the best cleaning methods before you get started.

Simple maintenance cleaning of your vinyl siding is fairly straightforward. Use a long-handled brush with soft bristles or a soft cloth to wipe it down with soap and water. If your vinyl siding has textured surfaces to it, you will want to use only the brush with soft bristles so as to avoid wiping stains into the grooves with a cloth. Start with the vinyl siding at the bottom of your house and work your way up. This will help to prevent streaking from the soapy water running down your house. If you have other materials, such as brick, on parts of your home, cover them so that runoff from your vinyl siding will not affect it. Lastly, always make sure you rinse the area before the cleaning solution dries.

If you want to speed the process of cleaning your vinyl siding along, you can buy or rent a power washer. First of all, however, make sure you have read the instructions on the power washer thoroughly. Second, always make sure you use the power washer at eye level. If you try to point upward, you may end up with water and cleaning solution behind the vinyl siding. These can later leak and cause streaks that can eventually lead to decay.

From time to time, you may find spots of mold or mildew on your vinyl siding. If these spots are small, then you can simply use a name brand household cleaner. Just always be sure to test it on a small portion of your vinyl siding in an inconspicuous place to make sure it will not damage it at all. If, however, the spots of mold or mildew are a little larger, you can use a solution of 30% vinegar and 70% water. Another common homemade solution is mixture of powdered laundry detergent, powdered household cleaner, liquid bleach, and water. It is best to just find the one that is most convenient and effective for you.

Not all vinyl siding stains, however, are mold or mildew. You may end up with dirt, soot, or even animal stains on the outside of your home. If that is the case, there are a number of general cleaners that are approved for use on vinyl siding. Check your local store for simple household cleaners, and then read the containers carefully to find out if they are effective and safe for use on vinyl siding and specifically on whatever the stain is that you have found on your vinyl siding.

Increasingly, vinyl siding is a common home exterior. It is low maintenance, attractive, and easy to install. You may, though, from time to time need to clean your vinyl siding in order to keep it in good working condition. Before you do, make sure you understand what is necessary and what the proper procedure is so that your vinyl siding will look good and last a long time.

About The Author

Henry Gallant is an expert author at http://www.vinylsidingetc.com, a comprehensive resource on vinyl siding.
Builder?s Dust ? Removing It

by: David Andrew Smith

Have you ever had renovations or alterations done to your property? Then you are fully aware of the amount of fine dust that is generated and manages to get absolutely everywhere even in places far removed from the actual working area. You then spend hours, days and possibly weeks attempting to remove this dust. Is there a much faster route to dust removal?

There most certainly is and it means following two or three rules if you wish to be successful.

? Never attempt to sweep up the dust and debris. If there are large pieces of masonry, plaster and other building materials then you have no option but to sweep this up for its removal. When doing so ensure that as much air flow through is generated by opening all available windows and doors. Do not attempt to carry out the final clean for several hours after doing this. Allow all the dust to settle before attempting this procedure. Sweeping simply throws huge amounts of dust into the air which will then be gradually deposited on every available surface from ceiling to floor.

? Always vacuum the dust from all surfaces such as sills and skirting, around window frames and door frames using the small attachments that are supplied with the vacuum. Upright vacuums unless they come with a long length of hose attachment are not ideal for this as it is likely there will be some use of step ladders to reach and vacuum the higher points in the rooms.

? Having vacuumed thoroughly all surfaces including the vertical ones where dust is likely to gather these surfaces should then be wiped down with a damp cloth. If marks and stains have appeared then it is advisable to carry out this procedure using a universal cleaner.

? With regard to the flooring, carpets should be thoroughly vacuumed, but if it is hard flooring then after vacuuming a scrubber drier should be used. Simply mopping alone will not remove the dust. Mopping will only wet the dust and spread it around so that it dries as ?muddy? streaks.

? If floor boarding is in place then after vacuuming carpet should be laid as soon as possible because every time the boards are walked on dust will rise out of the gaps in the boarding and settle on all the surfaces once again.

? If a scrubber drier is not available then use a mop with a large amount of water and wet vac the water up rather than mop it up. This may require two treatments to be completely successful.

If you follow these simple guidelines then your property should be free of builders dust in record time.

About The Author

David Andrew Smith is the owner of a commercial cleaning services company http://www.wesparkle.co.uk that provides its services throughout the UK.

Four Easy Ways To Prevent Spyware

by: Gary Gresham

How would you like to prevent spyware and adware from getting into your computer? You need to stop adware and spyware before it gets into your files. That way you're protecting your private information such as passwords, credit card numbers and other documents that you don't want to share with anyone.

Spyware and adware removers are important because they clean your computer of malicious files. But the best thing you can do is prevent spyware from ever being installed in the first place. Here are four ways to help prevent spyware and adware from getting into your computer.

Keep Your Windows Software Updated

One of the best ways to prevent spyware and adware from getting into your computer is to keep your Windows operating system software updated. Microsoft Windows update addresses security fixes that are constantly updating so your computer won't be vulnerable. Windows update is a free download from Microsoft at: http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Use Computer Firewall Protection

One of the most effective ways to stop spyware and adware is the use of computer firewall protection. Computer firewalls put up barriers to keep any malicious programs from being downloaded without your knowledge when you are on the Internet.

Computer firewall protection monitors everything going in and out of your computer. This acts as a protective shield allowing good data through while blocking the bad data from entering your computer.

Most people don't realize that if you use Windows XP it comes with a firewall that you can turn on or off. Microsoft's site explains the step by step process to enable or disable Windows XP Firewall with a tutorial at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283673

Be Careful What You Download

Another good way to prevent spyware and adware from getting in your computer is being careful what you download from the Internet. There are a few types of software that are particularly notorious for including spyware and adware.

File-sharing programs used to trade music, free games, screen savers, and even smiley face packages have been a problem because many of them contain adware.

Be aware of any product that claims to be free because it is likely to contain spyware and adware. Many free programs usually generate revenue from pop up ads or can even hijack your browser to take you to web sites you did not request.

Here's another tip to prevent spyware from being downloaded without your knowledge. When you close a window on the Internet never click on a box that says "agree" or "OK." Instead, click on the "x" located in the upper right corner of the window. Some programs trick you into agreeing to download software that you have never seen when you click on these.

Install Spyware Protection Software

Spyware protection software is the easiest way to automatically remove and prevent spyware from infecting your computer. You may wonder why you would need to purchase spyware protection software if there are free spyware cleaners.

Free spyware cleaners are good programs to get rid of spyware viruses you already have on your computer now. But many spyware programs automatically reinstall themselves even after they are removed. For this reason free spyware cleaners are not a permanent solution to solve spyware and adware problems.

Spyware protection software is designed to find all hidden programs and disable them before they have a chance to work. It's important that you get this software installed immediately on your computer.

Once you remove spyware and adware programs from your computer you'll find it will run faster and your personal information will be much safer. These tips should give you some insight on how to stop spyware and adware in its tracks. Your security and peace of mind is worth spending a little time to prevent spyware and adware from getting into your computer and taking over.

Copyright © 2005 - Spyware-Information.com - All Rights Reserved.

About The Author

Gary Gresham

This article is provided by http://www.spyware-information.com where you will find free spyware cleaners, downloads, removal software and valuable tips.
